Help Stop The Appropriation of Deaf Culture and Language For Profit
This is a petition to stop a woman from making profit off of cultural appropriation. Essentially, she’s a hearing girl who’s taken a few basic ASL classes and has decided to create a bunch of videos (that aren’t even captioned. Can we say rude?) “teaching people” how to say dirty phrases in ASL. Only, they’re often literally translated from English and/or completely wrong. One I clicked on, for example, was supposed to be saying “your cleavage is hot” and instead, she said: “your breasts are small. Are you hot?” (hot temperature-wise).
When asked why she doesn’t caption her videos, she said it’s because it’s an arduous task. IT’S REALLY NOT. windows movie maker does it REALLY easily, and if all else fails, you can put those little word bubbles in on youtube. She’s not a native speaker, she’s not deaf, she doesn’t have a degree in Deaf Studies, she barely knows any ASL, and apparently does not care about Deaf culture and the issues they fight every day, including trying to access media they can understand.
Please consider signing the petition to show your support with the Deaf community, and tell people it’s not okay to appropriate someone else’s language and culture for profit while at the same time discriminating against them.
